When Mark and his family brought their beloved dog, Luna, to the Humane Society of Southern Arizona (HSSA), they faced a heartbreaking decision. Luna, an eight-year-old Australian Labradoodle, was in constant pain due to bilateral glaucoma, which had left her completely blind. The pain was so severe that her family felt they had no choice but to consider euthanasia. They simply couldn’t afford the surgery that could help her, and it broke their hearts to think of losing her.
But because of supporters like you, Luna’s story didn’t end there. When Mark and his family brought her to HSSA, our medical team saw another path forward. They knew that with the right treatment, Luna could live a pain-free life.
Luna was admitted to HSSA’s wellness program, where she underwent surgery to remove her painful eyes. The team didn’t stop there; during her examination, they discovered that Luna also had several abscessed teeth causing her additional pain. Acting quickly, they performed a second surgery to address her dental issues as well.
The change in Luna’s life was remarkable. What began as a painful farewell turned into a hopeful recovery. Thanks to the dedicated care of HSSA’s medical team, and community donations, which helped cover her surgery, Luna went home pain-free and ready to enjoy many happy years with her family.
Today, Luna is thriving. Mark shares how she moves around their home with ease, confidently going up and down stairs, sniffing out her toys, and enjoying life without her sight. “We are so thankful for the veterinarians and staff at the Humane Society and for everyone who donated to make Luna’s surgery possible,” Mark said. “You gave us what we hope will be many more happy years with our sweet Luna. We’ll never forget your kindness.”
